Prior to joining us as Chief Engineer, Clem Skalski was an Advanced
Technology Consultant
to our firm. From 1977-1999 Dr. Skalski was Principal Engineer with Otis
Elevator Company.
Prior to 1977 he was with MITRE Corporation, providing technical support
to the Federal Railroad
Administration (FRA) and Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA). His
elevator-related
experience includes the following areas:
Preliminary system design studies
• System analysis and simulation using Matlab®
• Product innovation, proof of concept, and outsourcing
• Vertical and horizontal ride quality measurements
• Motion control systems for high-rise elevators
• Cost-effective, mass-produced elevator systems
• Safety and control systems using radars and lasers
• Electronic safety governors and techniques for elevators
• Active roller guide and magnetic guidance systems
• Design of various control circuits, sensors and actuators
• Load-measuring and pre-torque control techniques
• Rotary and linear motors and drives (DC, induction, synchronous)
• Automated people mover systems
Clem established the motion control technique used on Otis
high-rise elevators, and proposed
and built active vibration controls to improve the ride of high-speed
elevators. He has designed
and built a cost-effective linear-motor door operator, and was responsible
for testing motion and
active vibration controls. Dr. Skalski was instrumental in introducing
Matlab® and other advanced
simulation tools at Otis. He has solved many dynamic controls problems
relating to systems
having structural resonances, nonlinearities and time-variable parameters.
His prior work at Mitre
included the review of contractors' reports and plans submitted to the
FRA. This work related to
advanced propulsion and suspension, railroad electrification, signaling
and communications, and
braking systems. His work has also included advanced studies in linear
motors and magnetic
suspensions. Clem holds degrees in Electrical Engineering through the
PhD from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, Cornell University, Columbia University and Northeastern
University. He
is a Registered Professional Engineer in Connecticut, holds 28 patents,
has authored numerous
publications, and is a senior member of IEEE.
