Prior to co-founding Barker Mohandas, Rick Barker led technical
services worldwide for Otis. His responsibilities included major projects,
traffic-
system planning initiatives, dispatching control products, and a global
initiative to improve product energy efficiency. He co-led Otis' Odyssey
system that integrated elevators and people movers, was the company's
chief consultant to elevator consultants, and a key liaison with the Otis
and United Technologies research centers. At Jaros Baum & Bolles Consulting
Engineers in NYC he led the vertical transportation discipline. At Westinghouse
Elevator (now Schindler) he was responsible for the company's largest
projects in Western New York, and at Delta Elevator Service in Boston
(now Otis) for the company's largest modernization contracts. He has authored
papers on super-speed elevators, on an integrated horizontal-vertical
transportation system, and on elevators and fire safety for firefighters
and disabled persons. He is a member of the National Interest Review Group
of the ASME-A17 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, and a former
member of the A17.1 Emergency Operations Committee and similar NYC and
NYFD committees on fire and elevators. He co-chaired the Vertical and
Short-Distance Horizontal Transportation Committee for the Council on
Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, has guest lectured at MIT School of
Architecture, was board member of the Building Owners and Managers Association
of Buffalo, and at Otis was awarded 24 patents as inventor or co-inventor.
